Does a
month or
an expectant mother needs to understand the UV ray of the sun?
Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is made up of UVA, UVB and UVC
radiation. Both UVA and UVB radiation have the potential to cause skin cancer.
UVC radiation does not reach the earth's surface as it is absorbed or scattered
in the atmosphere.
Solariums expose the user to UVA and UVB rays and therefore increase the risk
of skin damage, sunburn and skin cancer.
Too much
ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause sun damage,
skin cancer and
eye damage. UV radiation is not related to temperature, so you can still get
burnt on cool, cloudy days.
There are three different types of UV radiation:
- UVA, which can make skin look older and cause skin cancer
- UVB, which causes sunburn and skin cancer
- UVC, which is absorbed by the ozone layer so doesn't reach the earth's
surface.
Many factors affect UV radiation levels.
The UV index (UVI) is a simple way to show the sun's UV radiation intensity.
It divides UV radiation levels into low (1–2), moderate (3–5), high (6–7), very
high (8–10) and extreme (11 and above). In Victoria UV radiation levels are most
intense from the beginning of September to the end of April.
When UV levels are 3 and above, sun protection is needed because the UV
radiation is intense enough to damage the skin. In Victoria from September to
April UV levels are 3 and above for most of the day. Particular care should be
taken between 10 am and 2 pm (11 am and 3 pm during daylight saving) when UV
index levels reach their peak.
